DIY Coconut Cave

Aquarium decorations can be expensive. Doing DIY can greatly reduce costs, while providing fish with the same benefits of regular decorations. Read on to learn how to make a DIY Coconut Cave!

Estimated cost: $2
Estimated time: 1-2 hours

Materials: Organic coconut, cooking pot, hand saw, metal fork/spoon (or other metal instrument for scraping), sandpaper
1. Find an organic coconut, preferably one that is as round as possible
2. Cut it in half with a hand saw
3. Scrape out most the insides using a metal instrument (I used a metal spoon)
4. Use the hand saw to cut out a hole
5. Sand with sandpaper until the desired appearance is reached
6. Boil in a cooking pot for 45 minutes (or until tannins are removed), replacing water as it becomes saturated with tannins.
7. Place in aquarium and enjoy!

Notes:
     ~May slightly lower pH
~May leach tannins if not boiled (tannins are not toxic, but can cloud the water)
~Tank inhabitants will probably hide in the cave
~Tank inhabitants could eat the cave (May need to replace every year or two)
