Unsuitable Plants

While most plants you can buy at a pet store are suitable for aquaria (make sure to clean them first), some are completely inappropriate choices. Check out these commonly sold plants that are unsuitable for long-term submerged aquaria:



"Mondo Grass" (Ophiopogon japonicus) Suitability for aquaria: ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ (1.5/5 stars)
Reason: Not fully aquatic (Will rot)
Extra Info: Can survive 6 months max in aquaria
What to do: Plant somewhere else


"Lucky Bamboo" (Bambuseae) Suitability for aquaria: ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ (1/5 stars)
Reason: Not fully submersible (Can not function underwater)
Extra Info: The bottom section can be submerged
What to do: Plant somewhere else OR remove the top of a HOB Filter and place the end of the bamboo inside.
